How accurate are James Ussher’s numbers?
In 1975 I started to read the Bible, starting with Genesis. From the Beginning, I was fascinated by the history and the chronology. Even tried to build my own Bible Chronology. But in 2003 God dumped a copy of the Annals of the World on my computer.
From top to bottom, even left to right, Ussher’s numbers are the ‘best guess’ estimate of time.
Someone may find a differing historical reference, or even change a name of a Persian king, or even distort time and even Scripture itself to dispute this work, in order to defend their -ism-.
And I challenge anyone to build a ‘complete’ or more accurate estimate.
Is this important? Below I used 2nd Peter 3:8 as a basis for ‘nowmil’. This verse is normally used to describe the patience of God towards us as individuals. But if we look at this collectively, then I believe we do have a picture of time as it develops and comes to a conclusion of God’s patience.
And to be honest, the Great Commission that Christ left us is still in effect, along with the Commands, and it is to benefit our well-being as well as the nations. Sheep and goats.
Exodus 20
8. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10. but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
11. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
2 Peter 3
1. Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),
2. that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
3. knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,
4. and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.''
5. For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,
6. by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.
7. But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same word, reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
1000 Year ism’s - Nowmil:
According to the James Ussher Chronology (Annals), we have the years 3000 (Solomon's Temple dedication) and 4000 being significant (Christ’s birth). Years being, since the Creation.
Year 1000 would be 70 years after Adam’s death and possibly Seth’s peoples highlight in their war with Cain's people, followed by the Flood (year 1656) to rescue Noah and his family.
If Abraham’s birth occurred at a highlight of the post flood patriarchs, year 2000, we have 4 ‘highlights in Church history’, and disintegration. Abraham in Ur after Salem breakup: City of Peace built by Noah and Shem (>Jeru’Salem) after the Babel Chaos. A case for Jethro, a Priest of Midian and King David who took Salem from the Jebusites and built Jerusalem.
Year 5000 maybe like 996 AD, the highlight of the original Mission, followed by Church ‘ism’ schisms and the ‘dark ages’.
Of
course the year 6000 or like 1996 AD, maybe
a highlight in the 'Mission to the world era', followed by 9/11/2001. A year
that began to change everything. America (and Europe), once The Great
Commission Center falling to the Babel principles: Cultural & moral chaos?
The Gospel replaced with some ‘ism’ and the Ten Commandments are Ten Suggestions, if they are mentioned at all, or at best watered down, or liberalized.
And maybe a replacement Spiritual Presence of the real Messiah in Israel? With the usual historical degradation, to say Juda’ism. There is a Jewish tradition indicating that the 7th millennium would be the age of the Messiah?
(Zech. 14 may be a clue to the future. Along with the past events and current events. Nuclear war? At least in the Middle East. If Israel preempts (a viable threat) as they usually do, then the nations will certainly come down on them?)
Disintegrating again? How about 7000, year 2996 AD? Is 7 millennia enough? Or too much? How about Sunday, 10/23/2996 00:01 GMT. The beginning of the end of everything?
(Well 10/2996. No one but the Father knows the day and the hour (Matthew 24:36). With all the time tinkering, like the Flood of Noah and the asteroid hit that precipitated it, who knows exactly? I imagine the solar system was a ‘perfect 360’ before the ‘big hit’).
Good a guess as any, but, mine is based on ‘everything’. You can quote me if I
am wrong.
Could not be 3996 AD or 8000?
Of course there are smaller ‘ups and downs’ in between, ie revivals. But the
major ones seem to indicate God working to reestablish the Churches Mission to
glorify God and His Creation, and bring a message of Peace and Salvation
‘available’ to all of humanity.
Of course if we add the 3-4 year period of 'Jesus teaching in the synagogues' (Luke 4:14-15), we sync secular dates with Biblical dates, 2018 years ago Jesus was born to rescue those who would have truly believed. Year of our Lord 1 AD.
(Note: still trying to figure this out, but history says Herod the Great died in 4 BCE and Jesus born in late 5 BCE. Seems like the missing 3-4 years of Jesus’ Life would have Jesus being born in 1 AD and Herod the Great dying in 2 AD.)
And as we see the world events unfolding today, they certainly could use some enlightenment of the Savior, the Mission, and the 10 Commandments (especially in our schools, courtrooms, politicians, the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker…).
1 John 2 (NKJV) 1. My little children, these things I write to you, that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 3. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4. He who says, "I know Him,'' and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
What we may need is a ‘landmark case’ before the US Supreme Court (God vs the Devil) deciding whether or not a witness can (should?) swear to tell the whole truth, before God, so help me. It may make difference! The media attention alone should inspire God fearing people to ‘stand up for their rights’. Nowmil, now what?
We may have a long way to go, until...
