Was Peter’s denial fueled by his confusion?
Matthew 26
69. Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee.''
70. But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying.''
71. And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.''
72. But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!''
73. And after a while those who stood by came to him and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, because your speech betrays you.''
74. Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!'' And immediately a rooster crowed.
75. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.'' Then he went out and wept bitterly.
He had just seen Jesus call the Pharisees 'a brood of vipers' and Jesus overturn the moneychanger tables in the Temple. Peter used the sword on a law enforcement officer, and maybe in trouble with the law. Jesus righted the situation by healing the ear and telling Peter to 'sheath the sword'.
It was all part of God's plan.
We should present it that way?
Matthew 26
46. "Rise, let us be going. See, he who betrays Me is at hand.''
47. And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48. Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.''
49. Then immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!'' and kissed Him.
50. And Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?'' Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
51. And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52. Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53. "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
54. "How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?''
55. In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me.
56. "But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.'' Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
Pilate & Herod, 'they found nothing wrong’
Luke 23
13. Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,
14. said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him;
15. "no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing worthy of death has been done by Him.
16. "I will therefore chastise Him and release Him'' 17. (for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18. And they all cried out at once, saying, "Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas''
19. who had been thrown into prison for a certain insurrection made in the city, and for murder.
20. Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them.
21. But they shouted, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!''
22. And he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.''
23. But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.
24. So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested.
25. And he released to them the one they requested, who for insurrection and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
It was all part of God's plan.

John 3
16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17. "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
